Designing Interaction, first published in 1991, presents a broadbased and fundamental re-examination of human-computer interaction as a practical and scientific endeavor. The chapters in this well-integrated, tightly focused book are by psychologists and computer scientists in industry and academia, who examine the relationship between contemporary psychology and human-computer interaction. HCI seeks to produce user interfaces that facilitate and enrich human motivation, action and experience; but to do so deliberately it must also incorporate means of understanding user interfaces in human terms - the province of psychology. Conversely, the design and use of computing equipment provides psychologists with a diverse and challenging empirical field in which to assess their theories and methodologies.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Task Models and Diagrams for User Interface Design, TAMODIA 2007, held in Toulouse, France, in November 2007. The workshop features current research and gives some indication of the new directions in which task analysis theories, methods, techniques and tools are progressing. The papers are organized in topical sections.
Cognitive Work Analysis

Type: BOOK - Published: 1999-04-01 - Publisher: CRC Press
This book describes, for the first time in pedagogical form, an approach to computer-based work in complex sociotechnical systems developed over the last 30 years by Jens Rasmussen and his colleagues at Risø National Laboratory in Roskilde, Denmark. This approach is represented by a framework called cognitive work analysis. Its goal is to help designers of complex sociotechnical systems create computer-based information support that helps workers adapt to the unexpected and changing demands of their jobs. In short, cognitive work analysis is about designing for adaptation. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides a motivation by introducing three themes that tie the book together--safety, productivity, and worker health. The ecological approach that serves as the conceptual basis behind the book is also described. In addition, a glossary of terms is provided. Part II situates the ideas in the book in a broader intellectual context by reviewing alternative approaches to work analysis. The limitations of normative and descriptive approaches are outlined, and the rationale behind the formative approach advocated in this book is explored. Part III describes the concepts that comprise the cognitive work analysis framework in detail. Each concept is illustrated by a case study, and the

This compendium brings together leading researchers in the fields of Intelligent Systems and healthcare aiming at medical engineers, healthcare managers and computer scientists worldwide. This book is an overview of intelligent paradigms and strategic investments that might payoff for the healthcare enterprise. Specifically, the reader will get ideas for efficiency enhancements for improving effectiveness and quality of care and for increasing patient safety. "Advanced Intelligent Paradigms in Healthcare" straddles technologic topics from DNA processing and automating medical second opinions in the lab, to telemedicine and chat spaces for rural patient outreach, among many others. In terms of management concerns, this book also explores systems approaches such as automated clinical guidelines, institutional workflow management, and best practices and lessons learned with actual applications.
International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Mathematics with Virtual Manipulatives

Type: BOOK - Published: 2016-06-21 - Publisher: Springer
This book explores terminology, frameworks, and research being conducted worldwide on virtual manipulatives. It brings together international authors who provide their perspectives on virtual manipulatives in research and teaching. By defining terminology, explaining conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and reporting research, the authors provide a comprehensive foundation on the study and use of virtual manipulatives for mathematics teaching and learning. This foundation provides a common way for researchers to communicate about virtual manipulatives and build on the major works that have been conducted on this topic. By discussing these big ideas, the book advances knowledge for future research on virtual manipulatives as these dynamic tools move from computer platforms to hand-held, touch-screen, and augmented platforms.
