This lively study unpacks the intersecting racial, sexual, and gender politics underlying the representations of racialized bodies, masculinities, and femininities in early 1970s black action films, with particular focus on the representation of black femininity. Stephane Dunn explores the typical, sexualized, subordinate positioning of women in low-budget blaxploitation action narratives as well as more seriously radical films like Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and The Spook Who Sat by the Door, in which black women are typically portrayed as trifling "bitches" compared to the supermacho black male heroes. The terms "baad bitches" and "sassy supermamas" signal the reversal of this positioning with the emergence of supermama heroines in the few black action films in the early 1970s that featured self-assured, empowered, and tough (or "baad") black women as protagonists: Cleopatra Jones, Coffy, and Foxy Brown. Dunn offers close examination of a distinct moment in the history of African American representation in popular cinema, tracing its emergence out of a radical political era, influenced especially by the Black Power movement and feminism. "Baad Bitches" and Sassy Supermamas also engages blaxploitation's impact and lingering aura in contemporary hip-hop culture as suggested by its disturbing gender politics and the "baad bitch daughters" of Foxy

The Five Types of Women to Avoid in the Hood
Language: en
Pages: 150
Authors: Mcgregor Philippe
Categories: Self-Help
Type: BOOK - Published: 2020-02-07 - Publisher: iUniverse
In the hood, a woman can make a man successful—or destroy him. The black community has a wide variety of women, good and bad, and now author Mcgregor Philippe seeks to help men watch out for those who can damage them. Philippe describes five particular types of women in the hood that men should try to identify at first meeting so that they can then run for dear life: the thot, the mammy, the hood rat, the bad bitch, and the educated ratchet. He explains how these women can be disastrous to a man’s life; no matter how mean a man is, even if he is a thug, an armed robber, or an assassin, he can never be as mean as these women. Philippe’s goal is to save men from falling in traps that would lead to their downfall and to inspire women on taking a positive change in their behavior. In this self-help guide, one man provides a description of five types of toxic women that inhabit the hood and hopes to aid men in avoiding them.

#MeToo and Literary Studies
Language: en
Pages: 432
Authors: Mary K. Holland, Heather Hewett
Categories: Literary Criticism
Type: BOOK - Published: 2021-09-23 - Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
Literature has always recorded a history of patriarchy, sexual violence, and resistance. Academics have been using literature to expose and critique this violence and domination for half a century. But the continued potency of #MeToo after its 2017 explosion adds new urgency and wider awareness about these issues, while revealing new ways in which rape culture shapes our everyday lives. This intersectional guide helps readers, students, teachers, and scholars face and challenge our culture of sexual violence by confronting it through the study of literature. #MeToo and Literary Studies gathers essays on literature from Ovid to Carmen Maria Machado, by academics working across the United States and around the world, who offer clear ways of using our reading, teaching, and critical practices to address rape culture and sexual violence. It also examines the promise and limitations of the #MeToo movement itself, speaking to the productive use of social media as well as to the voices that the movement has so far muted. In uniting diverse voices to enable the #MeToo movement to reshape literary studies, this book is also committed to the idea that the way we read and write about literature can make real change in the world.

A modern Hades and Persephone retelling ... My name is Sebastian Lindstrom, and I’m the villain of this story. Don’t mistake this for a confession. I neither seek forgiveness nor would I accept it. My sins are my own. They keep me company. Instead, this is the true tale of how I found her, how I stole her, and how I lost her. She was a damsel, one who already had her white knight.
