Bei der Beschäftigung mit dem Genre der Fantastik wird ersichtlich, dass eine Einordnung fantastischer Texte anhand des Kriteriums der Nähe oder Ferne zur Realität, also inwiefern die Texte mimetisch darstellend sind, schwerfällt. Die Fantastik kann zunächst aber durch ihre Distanz zur Realität definiert werden. Immer wieder sind fließende Übergänge zwischen der "Realität" – die in dieser Arbeit als Alltagswelt bezeichnet wird, um die Möglichkeit realer Erlebnisse in der fantastischen Welt offen zu lassen – und der fantastischen Welt zu bemerken, so auch in Katherine Patersons 1977 erschienenem Jugendroman Bridge to Terabithia, der 2006 verfilmt wurde. Der Roman thematisiert die Freundschaft zwischen Jess Aarons und Leslie Burke, die gemeinsam Abenteuer in der von ihnen erschaffenen Fantasiewelt "Terabithia" erleben.
