This study closely analyzes key works by five pivotal playwrights: Sidney Kingsley, Arthur Miller, David Mamet, August Wilson, and Suzan-Lori Parks, in a comparison of the treatment of money in a range of American plays from the Great Depression to the early twenty-first century. Money emerges as a site of anxieties regarding the relation of signs to the real: a “monstrous” substance that seems to breed itself from itself; a dangerous abstraction that claims for itself a “hard” reality, transforming lived reality into an abstraction. At the same time, money’s self-generating properties have made it a serviceable metaphor for the American ideal of “self-making”; money’s ability to exchange means for ends, abstract for concrete, representation for real, has made it an emblem of our postmodern condition. Money has been conceived as a malevolent force robbing us of our natural relation to the world and to ourselves, and as an empowering one with which we may remake this relation. This ambivalence about money constitutes an important animating tension of American drama. Furthermore, anxieties surrounding money resemble in important ways anxieties surrounding theatre, and the plays’ treatment of money reveals interesting tensions between a persistent American dramatic realism and naturalism, and a

It's a dream interview with a former President of the United States, but which President? He can remember a blinding light and thinking some moron failed to dim his headlights. Then nothing. Now, he's sitting in some club and being approached by a man that looks like George Washington. It has to be a hoax. But it turns out he's at The Dead Presidents Club where he also interviews, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Jack Kennedy and other deceased Presidents. He learns that the Dead Presidents have no confidence in the ability of today's leaders to solve today's great issues. As the interviews continue, he hears how the experiences of the Dead Presidents with problems of the past can provide solutions for the problems of today, most notably, the energy problem, the threat of terrorism and the war in Iraq. He finds great wisdom and a new perspective from the interviews. But will he find an audience?

"Entertaining…Carlson shifts deftly among sombre, macabre, and playful stories and shows how the death-tourism industry reveals more than amusing trivia." —The New Yorker In Dead Presidents, public radio host and reporter Brady Carlson takes readers on an epic trip to presidential gravesites, monuments, and memorials from sea to shining sea. With an engaging mix of history and contemporary reporting, Carlson explores the death stories of our greatest leaders, and shows that the ways we memorialize our presidents reveal as much about us as they do about the men themselves.

Thor, former Norse God of Thunder, has returned to his day job at the Secaucus Holiday Inn, surlier than ever. His Google alert for "Ragnarok" is bringing in fewer and fewer results, and he's beginning to think that the Twilight of the Gods might never come to free him from the hellish nightmare that is minimum-wage customer service. But then Timmy, a telekinetic, telepathic super-squirrel, comes skittering back into Thor's life, bruised and slightly smoking after having his tail handed to him by a two-hundred-year-old mad scientist in a robotic exoskeleton. The rodent needs help, and, despite his best intentions, that help is going to have to be Thor and his friends Chester A. Arthur XVII and Queen Victoria XXX. DEAD PRESIDENTS, the second book in the EXPONENTIAL APOCALYPSE series, continues where the first one left off, following Thor and company through a world rife with megalomanical clones, dinosaur armies, zombies, mad scientists, rhinos with lasers, and all manner of action and misadventure. Uproarious and unrestrained, DEAD PRESIDENTS puts the "doody" in doomsday and the "ha" in worldwide annihilation.
