Mit einem der kleinsten Budgets der Liga stellt Beane seine Mannschaften Jahr fur Jahr zusammen, die erfolgreich und konstant um die Play-Offs mitspielen. Dabei wahlt er Spieler aus, die nach bekannten Statistiken mittelmassig zu sein scheinen, jedoch gemass sogenannter sabermetrics uberdurchschnittlich zum Erfolg der Mannschaft beitragen. Bei sabermetrics handelt es sich um "the search for objective knowledge about baseball," sinngemass im Deutschen der Suche nach objektiviertem Wissen uber Baseball. Die genannten Jahre zwischen 2000 und 2003 werden heute als Moneyball Years bezeichnet und dienten dem Buch-Bestseller Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game" aus dem Jahr 2003 von Michael Lewis sowie dem Hollywood-Film Moneyball" mit Brad Pitt und Philip Seymour Hoffman in den Hauptrollen 2011 als Grundlage. Diese Form der unkonventionellen Bewertung von Sportlern entwickelte sich daraufhin weiter und ist nun auch in anderen Sportarten, wie zum Beispiel im Eishockey, anzutreffen.
