An imaginative and exciting exposition of themes from Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, this book helps readers find their way around the "forest of remarks" that make up this classic. Chapters on language, mind, color, number, God, value, and philosophy develop a major theme: that there are various kinds of language use - a variety philosophy needs to look at but tends to overlook.

Many still consider Ludwig Wittgenstein’s 1953 Philosophical Investigations to be one of the breakthrough works of twentieth-century philosophy. The book sets out a radically new conception of philosophy itself, and demonstrates all the attributes of a fine analytical mind. Taking an argument from Plato and subjecting it to detailed (and very clear) analysis, Wittgenstein shows his understanding of how the sequence and function of differing parts of a highly-complex argument can be broken down and assessed. In so doing, he reaches a logical position of simultaneous agreement and disagreement with Plato’s philosophical position. Philosophical Investigations is also a powerful example of the skill of interpretation. Philosophical problems often arise from confusions in the use of language – and the way to solve these problems, Wittgenstein posits, is by clarifying language use. He argues that philosophers must study ordinary uses of language and examine how people use it as a tool in their everyday lives. In this highly-interpretative way, the meaning of a word or sentence becomes relative to the context (people, culture, community) in which it is used. Rather than debate abstract problems, Wittgenstein urges philosophers to concern themselves with ordinary life and the concrete situations in which humans find

"This is a marvellously clear, compact, and compelling introductory guide to Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. In something less than 200 pages. Ahmed deftly reveals both the global structure of the Investigations and also the fine-grained argument-structure of its most famous set pieces, and appropriately embeds it in its historical-philosophical context too. I'll unfailingly recommend this book to my students.' Robert Hanna, University of Colorado, USA Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations is a hugely important piece of philosophical writing, one frequently encountered by students of philosophy. However, there is no escaping the extent of the challenge posed by Wittgenstein's work, in which complex ideas are often enigmatically expressed. In Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations: A Reader's Guide, Arif Ahmed offers a clear and thorough account of this key philosophical work.

In some cultures this would be the front cover, you have to travel their roads on the left which they call the right. Use breeds context which of course is the source of all meaning. We all take context for granted, don't we? Do you know where your context is right now? You know how we can listen to certain music, and participate for a while? We don't have to hum, we just feel part of it, well we do become part of it, as the riff goes roundabout. Now, if you read Henry's book slowly, open yourself, like the book will be open to you, then you will become part of this book's thoughts. It's the same. Yes, there are stories and we all get lost in stories, but there are also streets of thought, new and changing perspectives. You will make new associations, seeing old ones for the first time for what they really are, just one of many possibilities. And then, you will realize that philosophy and music can be one and the future, if we just make it so. This book will appeal to those who like jam or jazz music. Ever drive down Sunset and

The style of Wittgenstein's writing in his Philosophical Investigations seems quite peculiar to many readers, and is in many way unlike any other style of writing in the history of philosophy. In Philosophical Health, Richard Gilmore argues that Wittgenstein's ultimate goal in the "Investigations" is to restore us to a condition of philosophical health. The traditional methods and styles of doing philosophy, Gilmore suggests, led to a strange kind of philosophical sickness. Philosophical health is a condition that does not repudiate the philosophical search or philosophical wonder, but does free us from a kind of sickness that results from looking in the wrong places for the wrong kinds of answers. According to Gilmore, Wittgenstein thought that to do philosophy in the right way we have to pay careful attention to the way we speak and think about things in our everyday lives. Philosophical Health is an original and thought-provoking look at Wittgenstein's later philosophy.
